Something Sketchy

Gunnera Manicata

Gunnera Manicata

Our Gunnera Manicata, next to the pond, is currently bursting back into life after a winter hibernation. Probably my favourite plant, it will grow amazingly quickly to an enormous size before dying back again in the Autumn, when we will wrap it in its dead leaves to protect it from the extremes of the winter and await its next resurrection..

With its origins in South America, there is definitely something very primeval about it, almost alien. It is sometimes called ‘Giant Rhubarb’ which I find very inappropriate for something so imposing... you wouldn’t put custard on a triffid!
